Shipping containers modified and used as small apartment accommodation for the homeless in the Brighton area has proved to be a ‘overwhelming success ‘ by the Brighton housing trust   ‘BHT’. Using second hand 40ft shipping containers, removing doors and replacing them with new large windows and partitioning off rooms to create small by light and self-contained living spaces for Brighton’s less well off. the Richardson site which was previously a  scrap metal yard and is now run by ‘BHT’ (Brighton housing trust) acquired planning for the shipping container based project in 2012 and proved to be a fast and economical was of setting up housing.

‘An independent report into the satisfaction of residents staying at the Richardson’s Yard site found 94% of people felt the accommodation was an improvement on where they lived before’.
